Welcome to Wringer

Wringer is one of my most favorite books. The themes of the book are peer pressure, violence in our society, and bullying, to name a few. Think about these themes as you add your thoughts are feelings to the blog.

  1. I am happy for Palmer that he said "no" to the treatment and that he took care of the pigeon Nipper instead of just killing it.

    OR BULLING!!!!

  3. Why do you think books should not contain violence or bullying? Is there anything that we can learn from reading about this type of violence or kids bullying others? Is there a lesson to be learned?

  4. Alexis, it was nice to see that Palmer could think for himself and not bend to peer group pressure. Also, that he could see that when an expectation of him did not match his moral views he was prepared to say no. It is a great story about learning to stand up for what you know is right, even when it is difficult.

  5. I think this book should not have violence in it because, this is a childrens` book not an adult book and it teaches kids to be violent and it shouldn`t have bullying in it either because, theaches kids to bully. Besides, those two things this book overall is a interesting and great book.

  6. I tink Palmer is VERY VERY brave because he said " sorry guys I do NOT want the treatment "
because he stood up to the gang (the boys) and said i do not want to take the treatment and if you cared for people you would NOT give them the treatment

  8. I think Palmer was brave when he stood up to the gang and Farquar even though he had visions of being beaten up by the gang and run out of town by all of the 10 year olds. He said no to everything to protect Nipper. He did what he thought was right.

  9. I think the book was about a boys growing up and getting more brave on the way because in the begging he was not thinking because did not do what his brain was telling him to do but in the middle he was thinking more by keeping nipper like he wanted to but still ,just a little, did not listen to what he wanted to do but at the end he did every thing he wanted to do ,like not be a winger ,not taking the treatment ,and by making his dad a pigeon lover and not a winger.

  14. I think The Wringer is a good book because it teaches you about the feelings of the people being harrassed. It also teaches you not to bully people unless you want to be harrassed and bullied. This book is also good because it tells you that you should be able to choose what you want to do instead of doing what everybody else is doing. The thing that surprised me was Palmer finally yelled out his true feelings that he did not want to be a wringer. The only thing I did not like about this book was that pigeons were suffering for what the town was doing.

  17. I learned that some people can be really cruel and make you do things that you have no choice in doing and that some people should let you have a choice of what you can or cannot do.

  21. The way I feel about peer pressure, one theme of the book, is, that, I do know how it feels, and I feel that Palmer should go with what he wants to do. For example, Palmer should take Dorothy's advice which is, he should just do what he feels he wants to do. Plus, my advice would be that he should be a leader instead of a follower and do what he feels is right. It all pretty much comes to, be yourself and don't be a follower, be a leader! The way that I feel about violence in our society, another Wringer theme, is that, unlike "The Beans Boys", you should stick to what suits your self and ignore the violence and don't get into it unless you are that kind of person that is a trouble maker and doesn't do what is right in the world. All of the rest of the book themes in Wringer, I beleive that you should just be your self, don't be shy to stand up to people, and do what is right.
